The Horrific True Story Of Ronald DeFeo Jr. And The Amityville Murders

just the mention of Amityville, New York can send chills down your spine. After all, one of its iconic Dutch Colonial houses made TIME’s Top 10 List of Haunted Places thanks to the notorious Amityville murders. This is almost entirely due to the 1977 book and later movie franchise The Amityville Horror. Though, despite the book’s claim that it recalls the ‘true story’ of the hauntings within its walls, there’s evidence that the residents of 112 Ocean Avenue – George and Kathy Lutz – fabricated the story that became an urban legend.

‘Exclusive ‘The Amityville Murders’ Trailer Warns You Not to Listen to the Voices

“One of America’s most enduring horror stories has found new life onscreen again in The Amityville Murders. The latest in the long list of films inspired by the Amityville haunting, The Amityville Murders goes back to the start, telling the story that proceeded the one detailed in the iconic 1979 horror movie The Amityville Horror. The film is inspired by the true story of Ronald “Butch” DeFeo Jr., who murdered his entire family with a high-powered riffle while they slept, later stating he heard voices that ordered him to kill. The Amityville story has been done a lot, so it’s hard to do something new with the material and going back to the true-life tragedy is certainly a bold move. It looks like The Amityville Murders will still lean into the paranormal angle, so we’ll see if the film can balance the weight of that tragedy with the haunted house genre. The DeFeo story was also more or less covered in The Amityville Horror II: The Possession, but it looks like this one is hewing a little closer to authentic details in some regards (using the real names, etc.).

The Amityville Murders Trailer Reveals What Happened Before the Horror

"The Amityville Murders trailer has dropped and it's horrific and dark. The upcoming movie is a prequel to the 1979 horror classic The Amityville Horror, and it centers on 23-year-old Ronald "Butch" DeFeo Jr. There have been a number of Amityville movies over the years, but the first one is still the best, so going in to make a prequel is a pretty bold move, though from the looks of the trailer, director and writer Daniel Farrands seems to have pulled off something pretty special with The Amityville Murders. In 1974, Ronald "Butch" DeFeo Jr. murdered his entire family with a high-powered rifle while they were sleeping. During the court case, DeFeo Jr. claimed that he heard voices in his head that told him to commit the gruesome act. He was later convicted on six counts of second-degree murder. This is the story that the The Amityville Murders will tackle and the story that influenced The Amityville Horror. Some of DeFeo Jr.'s story was told in The Amityville Horror II: The Possession as well as the more recent remake, but it looks like the latest take will have more of an authentic look on the subject matter. This has naturally led to speculation among those same fans, which director James Wan has apparently had enough of. The “Saw” and “The Conjuring” filmmaker took to Twitter to dispel any rumors about the delay, explaining that the problem is simple: “It’s me.”
